Solly - Trauma
By: Lauren Richman, DVM
Salomon (Solly) is a 1 year old Jack Russel Terrier that was found as a stray with bite wounds to his hind legs from a bigger dog. He presented to the Santa Fe Animal Emergency Clinic because a wound opened up in his inner thigh that appeared to be leaking intestinal contents. He was very emaciated, weighing only 14lbs. Drs. Richman and Stewart took him to surgery to find that his abdominal wall had a tear in it, his intestines had gotten stuck through the tear under his skin by his leg, and he had a puncture in the intestine that was draining out the hole in his skin. His intestines were very dilated from being trapped under the skin. He was very lucky that his intestines did not rupture or he might have died.
After surgery, he was started on a slow re-feeding plan after his prolonged starvation. 1 month later, he is weighing in at just over 16lbs, and has become the fantastic little bundle of energy that is so typical of Jack Russel Terriers. He loves to be with people and he is VERY enthusiastic about food!
He was saved by the good will of several good samaritans, including Dr. Richman, who is currently fostering him until Solly finds a forever home. |

Dr. Richman is an emergency veterinarian at our Santa Fe location. She earned her DVM degree from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Following graduation, she completed a 1 year small animal rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Wheat Ridge, CO, which is where she discovered her love of emergency medicine. She joined our team of ER doctors in July of 2009.
