Blood Bank
Like humans, animals that suffer from trauma, anemia or bleeding disorders may also require lifesaving transfusions. Because we see so many patients in need of transfusions, the Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Centers created a volunteer Blood Donor Program to help meet its needs. We help supply blood products to veterinarians in the community whose patients may also need transfusions. Blood donors help save hundreds of lives every year. A blood transfusion can be the difference between life and death in situations involving car accidents, poisonings or debilitating chronic illness.
To help sustain an adequate blood bank, we are always looking for donors to ensure all blood products are of the optimum quality and quantity. Please contact us if you are interested in being a part of our Blood Donor Program. Below are certain criteria for evaluating the health status of potential donors:
Dogs:
Age: 2-6 years
Weight: 50 pounds or greater
Current on vaccinations
Heartworm status negative and on preventative
care
No ongoing health problems
No previous history of transfusion therapy
Must have pleasant disposition |
Cats:
Age: 2-6 years
Weight: 10 pounds or greater
Current on vaccinations
Must be FeLV/FIV/FIP negative
No ongoing health problems
No previous history of transfusion therapy
Must have pleasant disposition, and must be strictly
an indoor pet |
Benefits
All potential donors will receive free blood analysis:
- Feline preliminary testing is FeLV/FIV, Mycoplasmosis, CBC, full chemistry panel and blood typing
- Canine preliminary testing consists of blood typing, Ehrlichia, heartworm, Babesia gibsoni and Babesia canis for some breeds, CBC full chemistry panel and blood typing.
Results will be forwarded to your pet’s primary care veterinarian. If your pet meets the qualifications for becoming a blood donor, we will schedule four donations each year. For each unit of blood donated, your pet will be entitled to receive a unit if needed during its lifetime. Your pet will also receive a gift bag at each donation as our way of saying Thank You.
